Chicago native screenwriter, producer, and actress Lena Waithe showcased her new upcoming film during the BET Awards last night. She has written and produced this film, but it is directed by the infamous woman named Melina Matsoukas who directed Beyonce’s Formation video and a few episodes of Issa Rae’s Insecure. The film is called Queen & Slim and it about a black couple in love, but an incident happens where a police officer is shot and killed in self-defense and looks as though the couple makes a run for it.
Waithe showed this film earlier in the year at a Cinemacon and called this film protest art according to IndieWire. The film is set to release November 27, 2019, and the world couldn’t be more excited. Lena Waithe has an amazing way of storytelling. I believe this film Queen & Slim will have a beautiful way of depicting black love and the war we have to deal with, within our communities consistently. The film stars some great actors and actresses such as Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine, Chloe Sevigny, and Grammy-winning country singer Sturgill Simpson.
