Greetings to you! I am Hazel Kersellius. My journey as a writer started closer during my college career at Stony Brook University, S.U.N.Y and Brooklyn College, C.U.N.Y. and initially led me to having an appreciation for poetry and the arts as a whole.
At Brooklyn College, I graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism. Before graduating I took a few classes on an introduction to poetry, but I was not fluid in it, though I enjoyed it. I used it primarily for self-expression and a way to convey abstract ideas about life in general. I did not have a passion for it until years later.
My family has always encouraged me in God and I pressed toward that in my own way. After really committing my life to God more seriously and having a relationship with Him, He revealed the gift of writing to me after I had a moment when I ministered to the Lord in song in 2010. I thought to write songs for God since He has been my inspiration and the source of my strength. What I thought would be a song, birthed a continuous series of poems that were written in a matter of a few minutes for the most part. Soon I was able to compile them in my manuscript which is in the process of getting published for my book of Christian poetry.
Today, I have over triple what the manuscript contains and they keep coming as the Holy Spirit continues to inspire me.
I have read my poems at functions, churches and special events. I have also participated in the NYC’s Poetry Festival on Governor’s Island in the summers of 2017 and 2019. I also write for ministry for my local church. My church family has been and continues to be a great support. It is my hope to inspire many people to the love of God and to have a relationship with Him and to be a voice that can minister to the heart of the broken and express the jewels, love, and wisdom of God for life with a fresh outlook that can benefit many in this world.
Uncovered Culture Magazine is a wonderful platform that will allow me to share with you the roses of life’s journey, smell its fragrance and share its beauty and learn from holding its thorns. I’m excited to be a part of such an awesome team. I am looking forward to being an expression of light and to lighten up your world and keep you in the know, share expressions of poetry, reflections, inspirations and more!
